The highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup—co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico—officially kicked off on June 11, and the group stages are currently delivering major upsets and thrilling blowouts.
With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the opening weeks have provided a massive slate of matches across North America. As of today, June 20, we have already seen some dominant performances:
Canada’s Historic Rout: The Canadian men’s national team electrified their home crowd at BC Place in Vancouver with a stunning 6-0 dismantling of Qatar.
Brazil’s Statement: Over in Philadelphia, Brazil secured a comfortable 3-0 victory against Haiti.
USA Holds Strong: The USMNT successfully defended their home turf in Seattle, defeating Australia 2-0 in a hard-fought match.
The action is far from over. This weekend features a massive slate of Group E, F, G, and H matchups, including highly anticipated games between the Netherlands and Sweden, and Spain taking on Saudi Arabia.
Esports: The $75 Million World Cup Moves to Paris
While the traditional soccer world focuses on North America, the competitive gaming community is turning its eyes toward Europe. The 2026 Esports World Cup (EWC) is set to run from July 6 through August 23, but the biggest headline isn’t just the games being played—it’s where they are being played.
Originally scheduled to return to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the Esports Foundation announced in May that the 2026 event would be relocated to the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in France. The pivot was made to provide stability for teams and fans amidst regional uncertainties in the Middle East due to the ongoing 2026 Iran conflict.
Despite the venue change, the scale of the event is staggering:
A Record-Breaking Purse: The tournament boasts an unprecedented $75 million total prize pool.
Massive Scale: 2,000 players will compete across 25 different events in 24 major esports titles.
The Club Championship: $30 million of the prize pool is reserved for the Club Championship, rewarding organizations that perform the best across multiple different games throughout the summer.
Roster Shakeups in the Game Lineup
The game lineup itself has generated significant buzz. Trackmania makes its EWC debut this year, and Fortnite is returning to feature its fast-paced Reload game mode. However, the exclusion of StarCraft II from the roster has sparked criticism from the real-time strategy (RTS) community, marking a rare year without a major traditional RTS presence at the event.
